Post-revolutionary France. A boy from a poor family ends up in jail for stealing candy, where he is suddenly accused of murder, which, of course, he did not commit. The whole family turns their backs on him, leaving the last hope to the drunken lawyer, who himself does not particularly believe in the innocence of his client… He has a bitter taste for freedom, but he is unable to give up, even if the gang rape and all kinds of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment take place in the prison. As a result, the story turns out to be a true detective story – only at the very end do you find out exactly what happened and why.
